A fantastic cultural expedition to the remote Northern region of Kenya and the Jade Sea. A quality mobile camping safari that begins with some game viewing in Shaba Reserve followed by a full day guided walk up Ol-Lololokwe Mountain. The safari then moves North to 'Worlds End' the most spectacular viewpoint of the Rift Valley. A two-day camel safari then follows in the remote areas north of Baragoi. The journey continues on a rugged road taking you to the shimmering seas of Lake Turkana and Loyangalani where you will stay at Oasis Lodge. There will be a half-day fishing expedition on the lake in which you can try your luck in catching the giant Nile Perch or landing a Tiger fish. There is also a visit to the El Molo tribe on the lakeshores near Loyangalani. As Loyangalani is the northern most point on the journey there is the option of taking a charter flight back to Nairobi (cost available on request) or returning to Nairobi by vehicle.

Your Itinerary

Day 1: Samburu

Depart Nairobi this morning, the route takes us north towards Mt Kenya. Cross the equator in Nanyuki and continue on to Timau where there will be a lunch stop at Kentrout Farm. After lunch the route takes us off the Mt Kenya massif and descends down to Isiolo, a multi-cultural town of Somali, Meru, Boran and Turkana inhabitants. Shaba Reserve is an hours drive from Isiolo, game drive en-route to our private camp arriving late afternoon.
Shaba Reserve shares with Samburu/ Buffalo Springs the distinction of being home to some of Kenya's rarer wildlife such as gerenuk, grevys zebra, reticulated giraffe and Somali ostrich. The reserve is renowned for it's majestic scenery, acacia tortilis wooded grasslands interspersed with swamps where the springs emerge. Shaba is lesser visited than it's sister reserves and the resulting tranquillity makes viewing it's wildlife and birds a serene experience.

Day 3: Samburu
Another day available for game driving or take the Mt Ololokwe hike.
Ol-Lololokwe Excursion - The walk commences at the foot of the mountain, a 2 hour drive from the Reserve, the terrain makes it quite a strenuous walk and it takes a full day. Mt. Ol-Lololokwe, meaning round headed, is one of the most distinctive landmarks in northern Kenya with it's stunningly massive rock face. The mountain is immersed in Samburu folklore and the Samburu guides are thoroughly knowledgeable on the historical and cultural importance of Ol-Lololokwe to their people as well as the flora and fauna.
Return to camp in Shaba.

Lake Turkana, formerly known as Lake Rudolf, is the biggest permanent desert lake in the world. It has rivers feeding into it but no outlet however massive evaporation causes it to be highly alkaline. The 'Jade Sea' is inhabited by giant Nile crocodiles, hippos and Nile Perch weighing up to 100 kgs. The lake is surrounded by inhospitable lands with year round scorching heat. This area is sparsely populated by members of the Turkana, Samburu and El Molo tribes.
